It was while working as a vet he realised, that prescription drugs were not getting to the cause of the illnesses he was treating. He then embarked on a programme of looking at the dog’s diet and started producing in his kitchen, with the help of his wife Tegwen, a food using the ingredients that he had been recommending to pet owners. The main ingredients being chicken, brown rice and vegetables. This proved such a success the only step now was to turn it into a dry food form commercially. In1993 Burns Pet Nutrition was born and the Holistic approach to feeding had begun. All Burns diets for dogs and cats are hypo-allergenic and free from artificial flavourings, colourings and preservatives.
The company has gone from these humble beginnings to the great success it is today, with a multi million pound turnover.
Burns is a family run company that places great emphasis on quality and customer service, supports numerous charities and organisations both locally and further afield and works hard to minimize its environmental impact.
Burns is based at Kidwelly in Wales and has offices and warehouses in Kilmarnock and Ireland.
John Burns still makes many visits back to his roots and although his father Jackie and his mother May have both passed away, his heart is still in Darvel and he will always endeavour to try and help any organisation that needs help.
