Samuel "Sammy" Cox

Born Darvel 13th April 1924

Sammy as everbody knows him, played at the age of 13 for junior side Glenafton,he signed for Darvel in 1940, he then played amateur with Queens park, Third Lanark and Dundee during World War 2.
Turned professional with Glasgow Rangers in 1946-47 making 13 appearances.
In season 1947-48 he was a first team regular and also gained his first cap for the national team against France on the 23rd May 1948, although France won 3-0.
1948-49 he played for Rangers in 43 games missing only one game.
That season Rangers became the first team to win the treble.
1949-50 Sammy was ever present.
1959-52 Rangers were without a trophy, but Sammy was still an important player for Rangers as well as Scotland.
1952-53 he played 37 games out of 47 and Rangers were back winning trophies again.
1953-54 played 44 games out of 47, no trophies.
In 1954 played his last game for Scotland against England at Hampden in front of 134,544 fans, although they lost 4-2 to the
" auld enemy" Sammy had the great of honour of being captain in his last international.
Sammy played his last game for Rangers on February 19th 1955.

Not too bad for a local lad fae Derval.

The quality and versitility of his positional play was such that some commentators called him a player out of his time, one they said who would have fitted naturally into the fluid Brazilian team of the eighties.
When you think that Brazil had such midfield players as Socrates and Falcao you begin to understand the esteem in which our Sammy was held.

After a short spell playing for East fife, Sammy emigrated to Canada where he is a living legend.
The N A R S D gave him their honorary Life Membership.
